2008 Young Naturalist Program

Sponsored by the Worth County Conservation Board

You are invited to participate in this year’s young naturalist program with Dan Block.  I have several different specialized items for the young naturalist programs.  There are some new programs this year!  You may sign up for as many as you wish, but please rank them by number.  Each of the below listed topics may run for different numbers of days and times (see schedule on reverse). Three programs are reserved for the older students only.  I now have a pontoon boat courtesy of the WCDA and it will be used for several programs including training you to safely operate a boat!

The boater education class will be three days and designed to meet (or exceed) the DNR boater education program.  Day 1, classroom on boater education, Day 2, Boat handling (students learn to drive and handle the boat). Day 3, Boating recreation including water skiing! DNR rules require boater education for young people to operate a boat.  After the class, you may take the DNR official test for a fee to receive certification.  See web site at http://www.iowadnr.com/law/boating/index.html for more details.

Each class offered will include a pickup meeting at Manly’s Bosworth park or Northwood’s conservation office, after which the students will be transported in the conservation van to whatever location the days program requires. Students from any community who can arrange their own transportation to Northwood or Manly are welcome to sign up for whatever class time works best for their schedule or interest.  If you are from Kensett, I can pick up/drop off if you sign up for the Manly programs (just note that you need a ride on the form).  For Hanlontown, I have decided to offer 2 full day programs with a mix of activities.  I will pick up and drop off (at the town park) in Hanlontown for those days, please bring a sack lunch.

Classes are limited to 6 people, first come first serve, though new participants will get priority on available spaces.  I will send each applicant an acknowledgment and a confirmation of their spot, or a rejection if all available spaces are filled. There is no fee for these programs.

  1. Shooting Program – We’ll be using pellet rifles in this session.  Marksmanship skills as well at fun shooting events will be featured.  Pellet rifles provided or you can bring your own.  Only for ages 10-12
  2. Fishing – We’ll spend the week fishing in four different streams or lakes.  For ages 8-12  We will fish from the pontoon boat some of the time!

  4. Wildlife Manager – New – We’ll learn to band birds and participate in wildlife managers activities.  A two day program.  Ages 8-12.  The program may involve boating or canoing on a marsh.

  6. Boater Education – New- see above description, Ages 10-12.

Please rank your choices if you are interested in more than one program.  I can usually fit everybody in somewhere.  There are no fees for the programs.  I welcome parent volunteers also, then I can add a few more kids with a parent bringing their vehicle.  If you wish to volunteer, please indicate that on the form.  You may also sign up online at www.worthcounty.org
